GolfShot: Golf GPS App

Media_http3bpblogspot_dsijo
Being an avid golfer, I am always away on golf trips and and playing new courses. Some courses provide a GPS right on your golf cart but many do not. Also most of the time I prefer walking the course so I have no access to a GPS except for the course layout on the back of the scorecard. Many courses are also no longer marking their sprinkler heads or the 150 and 200 yard distances to the middle of the green. So I recently purchased the GolfShot GPS App ($29.99), by Shotzoom Software, for my iPhone and was pleasantly surprised at the features as well as its accuracy. You have to ensure your iPhone is fully charged before going on course and you also have downloaded course information when you have access to wireless to avoid costly 3G and roaming charges when you are out of town.

The GolfShot GPS provides you with a GPS Rangefinder with:
  • Distances to the Front, Center and Back of Green
  • Up to 40 professionally-mapped targets per hole.
  • A GPS Aerial view with TouchPoint positioning, you can touch a target anywhere on the hole and get distances to that point and from that point to the green.
  • Ideal layup distances for your approach clubs
  • Distance tracking of any shot
  • 33,000+ courses worldwide ready to play
  • Scorecard that is easy and efficient to enter your scores and that generates PGA Tour quality statistics and allows golfers to share and compare their rounds.
GPS and Aerial views require an an internet connection (Edge, 3G or Wifi) and require that a Google Maps image of the course is available. Non-GPS iPhone users get the ability to view hole distances from their selected tee-box, and plan their approach shots with TouchPoint positioning – touch a target anywhere on the hole and get distances to that point from your selected tee-box and from that point to the green.

After you enter your scores and complete the round, the scorecard is saved on your iPhone, automatically sent your email address as well as uploaded to the GolfShot website where you can view the scorecard and statistics. The scorecard has the following features:

  • Keep score for up to four golfers
  • Simple score entry
  • Rotated full-round traditional scorecard view
  • Optional handicap play with your USGA, CONGU, EGA, or RCGA handicap
  • Stableford scoring
  • Automatic course handicap calculator
  • Net score and stroke score display
  • View statistics during and after your round
  • Get email and online scorecards
  • View, edit and enter past round scorecards
The GolfShot GPS App also has some great statitics that it presents from the scores and information you enter each round. Statistics include:
  • Fairways Hit, Missed Left & Right
  • Greens in Regulation
  • Recovery Scrambling
  • Sand Saves
  • Putts per Hole and per GIR
  • Scoring Averages on Par 3’s, 4’s and 5’s
  • Scoring Percentages

Vuvuvela 2010 App

Media_http1bpblogspot_dihuc
With the 2010 World Cup Soccer in full flight in South Africa, the buzzing sound of the fans blowing on their Vuvuzelas is part of being in the action. If you like me watching the matches on TV you can have your own Vuvuzela without even blowing. There are several Vuvuzela Apps in the App Store but the Vuvuzela that to me makes the closest sound to the real thing is the Vuvuzela 2010 App by moblio based in Amsterdam. You can choose several countries and the more you press the screen the more noise it makes. Give it a try, it's such fun Vuvuzelling while watching a match.

As I mentioned in my previous post the NHL Hockey playoffs are in full swing and my favourite team, the Vancouver Canucks have made it into the second round. Currently, I am obsessed about getting the latest news about the Canucks and there is no better way than listening to the Team 1040 radio station on AM 1040 which provides up to the minute news on all the NHL Teams. The great thing is when I am away from the radio in my car I can still listen to Team 1040 on the CHUM Radio iPhone App.

The Masters Golf Tournament iPhone App

Media_http1bpblogspot_aahhg
The Masters golf tournament in August Georgia is on this week. It's the first of four majors this year. It seems the spotlight is all focused on the Tiger Woods scandal this year but come game day tomorrow, the spotlight will hopefully be on the actual golf tournament and the play of all the golfers. I'm an addicted golf nut besides being an icrazee Apple fan so when the Masters golf club published an iPhone App, I was all over it. My picks for this year are Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Paul Casey.

The Official iPhone app for the Masters Golf Tournament offers live video and live scoring for the duration of the tournament from April 8 - April 11, 2010. Unfortunately, the live video only works in the US. For Canadians and International users you will need to look elsewhere but this is not the best part of the app. The hole-by-hole video fly overs is available to all and the best part of the app. If you're a golf fan you want to get the feel of each hole as the players are playing the hole.

Some of the key features include: live video with exclusive coverage of Amen Corner (hole 11, 12, and 13), holes 15 and 16, and Masters Extra (bonus one-hour pre-telecast coverage), new featured group coverage, on demand video highlights available at the end of each day. There is also leader board live scoring, pairings and tee times, and player information. Full course map, with par and yardage for each of the Masters Tournament's prestigious 18 holes. If you're a golf fan this App is a cool addition to watching the tournament on TV. Let me know what you think of the App and if the Tiger questions will become golf questions?

CTVOlympics.ca iPhone App

Media_http1bpblogspot_qxuaz
We in week two of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics Winter Games. I downloaded another Olympic iPhone App to get more information and news about the games. CTV has an Olympic App created by Indusblue Inc. The App has a full TV schedule, detailed event schedule by time, status and event, latest news and photos, athlete profiles and venues.

The CTV Olympics App also has push notification of breaking news and medals straight from the games. Although it is indicated the Push Notification Service is experiencing some difficulties and an update is on its way. The App also has an in-depth medal breakdowns and results data on every event of the Games. You can even follow event results while they are in progress. There is also a dedicated Hockey section with the most in-depth results data available, including detailed box scores, player stats and play-by-play. Finally, there are Live Blogs that you can get in the game with live blogging of the biggest events, such as Hockey, Curling and Figure Skating. CTV's panel of experts will join the interactive conversations throughout the Games.

The CTV Olympic iPhone App is everything you will need on the Games from Canada’s official broadcasters: CTV, TSN, Rogers Sportsnet, RDS, V, RIS Info Sports, OLN, OMNI, APTN and ATN. I have to say the news is more up to date than the Official Olympic iPhone App and the NBC iPhone App. Hope you enjoy the final week of the games.

Animations on the Vancouver 2010 Olympic iPhone App

Media_http2bpblogspot_ikyfp
With the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics currently on, I mentioned in a previous post to keep up with all the news, scores and venues I downloaded the free official Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games iPhone App. For those of you who have already downloaded the App, did you know if you shake the App you get animations of the Olympic mascots like Quatchi, Mukmuk and others. It's pretty cool, not mentioned anywhere. You should try it out.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games iPhone App is a location-aware schedule detailing more than 2000 sport and cultural events taking place over 17 days between February 12 and 28, 2010. Updated throughout the Games, the schedule adjusts to your time zone and works even without a data connection. Plan your Olympic experience by creating a personalized itinerary using favourites. The app also includes real-time results for every sport as well as headlines, photos and twitter streams. If you attending the games the guide uses your location to tell you what's on now close to you. It also provides maps to over 80 venues complete with information to help you get there, sport venue location diagrams and links to turn-by-turn directions. Enjoy!
