Apple TV 2.0

Media_http2bpblogspot_gbbfx
Unlike other Apple products I held off buying an Apple TV as I was not convinced that the features and price were a good mix for what I envisioned Apple TV should do. However, I recently bought version 2.0 as the price was right at $99 US. Also the new pocket size device is perfect for installing behind a TV mounted on a wall. Wow, the new Apple TV is so simple to install and has most of the features you and I would want. It lacks web browsing but I am not really sure I want to surf on my 52" Sony Bravia while sitting on the couch. It's great for browsing through photos with visitors. You can watch movies and music videos you downloaded onto your Mac and stream them to your TV. You can also view YouTube clips. I rented an HD movie directly from Apple TV and the quality was just great. I'm thinking of possibly subscribing to NetFlix for $7.99 a month but will sign up for a free month first to see what movies they have. Downside is you need one for each room you have a TV in. Also you'll need to buy an HDMI cable.

Redesigned Apple TV

I have been waiting for a few years for Apple to redesign the Apple TV. I never did buy into the original Apple TV. To me it was too expensive for the limited functionality when I could just connect my MacBook Pro into my TV. Maybe not as convenient but with all the same functionality. Well Apple has just redesigned the Apple TV and for $99 dollars I think they finally have a product worth buying. It is now in black and only 3.9" sq. and can be easily tucked behind a TV especially if you have your TV wall mounted. You can view content from you Mac or iPad, movies from NetFlix, videos from YouTube and pictures from MobileMe and Flickr. In addition Apple announced HD TV shows for 99c from iTunes. I am definitely buying an Apple TV, are you buying one too? Here is the Apple TV official announcement and the Apple TV site.

Steve Jobs Thoughts on TV Set Top Boxes

Media_http2bpblogspot_fbzqn
In an interview with AllThingsDigital, Steve Jobs answered a question about the future of television by saying the problem with the lack of innovation in television makes there no viable way to bring new products to the market. He said the reason why additional set top boxes like Apple TV have not been as successful is because the existing market for set top boxes is heavily subsidized by cable operators. Steve further said, set top boxes are free or $10 a month and that pretty much squashes any opportunity for innovation, because nobody's willing to buy a set top box. That's not making sense to me as I paid hundreds of dollars for a PVR with a terrible UI. So what are you thoughts on Apple TV as well as the upcoming Google TV. See the rest of Steve's thoughts on set top boxes below.

Steve went on to say, "Ask Tivo, ask Replay TV, ask Roku, ask Vudu, ask us, ask Google in a few months" taking a pessimistic shot at Google's recently announced plans to put Android in a series of TVs and set top boxes. He noted Sony and Panasonic have already tried as well. He mentioned the problem with adding an additional box to a users experience is that they end up with a variety of different boxes, each with its own remote and a unique user interface. "The only way that's ever going to change, is if you can really go back to square one, tear up the set top box, redesign it from scratch with a consistent UI across all these different functions, and get it to consumers in a way that they're willing to pay for it. And right now there's no way to do that", Steve said.

Are You Tired of Google, Now Google TV?

Media_http4bpblogspot_oaelq
I have to say I am getting tired of Google trying to take over the world.  Today they announced Google TV a clone of Apple TV.  It's a third party manufactured cable box with the capability of browsing the web. Google TV will be running the Android OS currently used on their smartphones. What's the bet everytime you use Google TV your screen will be plastered with ads.

I am not against Google TV but against the company's philosophy of take your ideas and information and if you complain they'll give it back or react, like cloning the iPhone, the Safari Web Browser, Twitter, Facebook and iPhoto. I'm starting to sense the world is also pushing back with complaints against Google collecting private data in Europe. So what do you think about living in a Google world?
